Obituary of Margaret A. Smith
Margaret (Peggy) A. Smith (née Fitzgerald) passed away peacefully on February 2, 2025, at the Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley, just days before her 85th birthday. She was born and raised in Medford, MA, and graduated from Medford High School in 1958. She later made her home in Billerica, where she raised her family, before settling on Cape Cod in Barnstable, where she enjoyed the beauty of the harbor and beach.
She was the beloved wife of Lawrence Smith and a devoted mother to Timothy Smith; Shannon Smith and her husband, Christopher Targett; Shawn Smith; and Todd Smith and his wife, Brittany (Powell) Smith. She was a cherished grandmother to Brittany Smith, Mackenzie Targett, Madison Targett, Matthew Smith, Tyler Smith, Madeline Lombardo, and Blake Smith, and a loving great-grandmother to Weston Micu. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Anastasia (Kirkell) Fitzgerald, the sister of the late Robert Fitzgerald, Maureen (Fitzgerald) Scott, and her husband, Patrick Scott. She was also a beloved cousin and aunt to many.
Peggy spent many years working with her husband at their family business, Radiant Venetian Blind, before transitioning to retail, where her warmth and kindness made every customer feel valued. She found her greatest joy in spending time with her many friends and grandchildren, showering them with love and unforgettable experiences. A natural uniter, she formed close friendships wherever she went.
She and Larry shared a deep love of the water, spending countless hours boating in Boston Harbor, the Charles River, and Cape Cod Bay. As members of the Riverside Yacht Club, they spent years exploring the waters aboard their boats, 'Ups and Downs' and later 'Blind Faith.' Whether participating in flotillas or setting off on their own with only paper charts and a spirit of adventure, Peggy navigated with skill and precision.
An avid walker, Peggy logged miles each day, maintaining her strength and vitality well into her later years. In the fall of 2023, she participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s—a cause close to her heart—as she courageously faced the challenges of the disease herself.
A celebration of her life will be held at Davio’s Seaport on Sunday, April 6th, from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM. As space is limited, we kindly ask close friends and family to join us in honoring her memory.
