Obituary of Eda V. Orr

April 13, 1938 – September 30, 2025

Eda Margaret Venti Orr, known to all who loved her as Edie, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family. She was a radiant light in the lives of all who knew her — a devoted mother, grandmother, wife, teacher, and cherished friend whose warmth, creativity, and kindness left an indelible mark on the world.

Born in Boston’s North End on April 13, 1938, Edie was the youngest child of Paolo and Luisa Venti, proud immigrants from Ortona dei Marsi, in the province of L’Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy. In 1937, the young family arrived in America with Edie’s two older brothers, Joseph and Virgil, carrying with them their hopes, values, and Italian heritage — traditions that would shape Edie’s life and legacy.

A graduate of Medford High School, Class of 1955, Edie continued her education by attending The Boston School of Fashion and Design, working with some of Boston’s most respected designers. She contributed to several prestigious projects, including working for designer Alfred Fiandaca, and Priscilla of Boston where she helped create bridesmaids' dresses for the royal wedding of Princess Grace of Monaco — a glamorous highlight in a life filled with elegance and creativity.

In 1963, Edie married the love of her life, Bernard Orr. Together, they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and family. They welcomed four children — Brian, Louisa, Bridget, and Paul — and made a home in Billerica, Massachusetts, where Edie poured her energy into raising her family, creating a warm and loving household, and later, nurturing the lives of others through teaching.

Edie’s passion for learning never waned. While raising her children, she returned to school to earn both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, eventually becoming a dedicated elementary school teacher in the Lowell Public School system. She often said her experience of only speaking Italian when she entered public school gave her a better understanding of what some of her immigrant students faced. Her classroom was filled with compassion, joy, and curiosity — a place where countless young minds were inspired and encouraged.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Edie was known for her delicious cooking. Her homemade sauce and gnocchi were legendary. She has a flair for hospitality and an extraordinary ability to form lasting friendships. Whether you knew her for a moment or a lifetime, you felt her genuine kindness and warmth. Her laughter, stories, and vibrant energy filled every room she entered.

Above all, Edie loved her family fiercely and completely. She took immense joy in her role as a grandmother to Benjamin and Samara, the beloved children of her youngest son, Paul, and his wife, Aliza. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the lessons she taught, and the love she gave so freely. The family would like to thank or is grateful for the care Edie received at D'Youville Senior Care of Lowell and for the hospice care from Tufts Medicine Care at Home.

Edie Orr was a woman of style, grace, intellect, and heart. She will be remembered always for the beauty she brought into the world — in the clothes she stitched, the meals she cooked, the students she taught, and the love she gave so generously to all.

Visitation will be held Sunday, October 5, in the Burns Funeral Home, 354 Boston Rd., (Rt. 3A), Billerica from 2:00 - 5:00 PM. Relatives and friends invited. Funeral will be held Monday, October 6, at St. Matthew the Evangelist Parish in St. Theresa's Church, 466 Boston Rd., (Rt. 3A), Billerica at 10:00 AM. Interment, Fox Hill Cemetery, Billerica.

She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
