Obituary of Gerard F. Murphy

Gerard Francis Murphy, 74, of Harvard, Massachusetts, passed away on May 18, 2026. Known affectionately to all as Gerry, he leaves behind a legacy of generosity, intellect, and a vibrant spirit that enriched the lives of everyone who knew him.

Gerry grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts, as the eldest of three children born to the late John and Josephine Murphy. He proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserve and built a career as a data analyst.

Beyond his professional life, Gerry was a man of diverse interests and deep intellectual curiosity. An avid reader, after retirement, he spent countless hours in libraries and bookstores. He possessed an amazing memory, with a vast recall of historical facts and current events. Gerry loved nothing more than engaging in conversation—eagerly sharing what he had learned, but always equally interested in what he could learn from others.

He found joy in the outdoors through snowmobiling, sailing, and fishing. Above all, his favorite pastime was simply hanging out and talking to people. His upbeat, positive personality and willingness to listen to and support others earned him a massive circle of friends. He was a trusted travel buddy, a dedicated volunteer, and the proud "Money Man" for Mindy’s Mission. To his friends' children, he was the cherished "Uncle Gerry"—more than just a friend, he was family.

He is survived by his loving sisters, Mary (Bob) Conrad of San Jose, CA, and Theresa (Michael) Hluchyj of Boston, MA, as well as his beloved niece, nephew, grandniece, three grandnephews, and many cousins. In addition to family, Gerry leaves behind a number of close and dear friends.

A Funeral Mass and Celebration of Life will be held on June 13, 2026 at 10 am at Sacred Heart Church, 16 Follen Road, Lexington, MA. Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate a life exceptionally well-lived. The Mass will be live streamed at https://www.sacredheart-lexington.org for those unable to attend in person.
