In Loving Memory of Herman (Sonny) A. Higgins Jr.
Herman A. Higgins Jr., 86, beloved husband of Frances H. (Tedford) Higgins, passed away peacefully at his home in Billerica, Massachusetts surrounded by his family on June 12, 2026. Known by all as Sonny, he was a kind, peaceful man who put his family first.
Born on January 27, 1940, in Waterville, Maine. He was the son of the late Herman and Hazel (Gifford) Higgins and brother of the late Herma Tingley.
Sonny is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Frances. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Brenda Kenney and her husband Michael Kenney, his son Jason Higgins, daughter Janice Higgins and son Jeffrey Higgins and his wife Phyllis Higgins, seven grandchildren Corey, Aaron, Alison, Meghan, Ruby, Ella, and Ryan and one great grandchild Benjamin.
Sonny grew up in Waterville with his mother and sister where he was always active in sports. He spent his summers in the community pool. In high school he was a star athlete lettering in three sports Football, Basketball and Baseball.
After graduating he joined the Navy where he proudly served his country for four years. During this time, he met and married his wife, Frances. After his naval service they moved to Massachusetts settling in Billerica in 1968. Even here he was active in sports. You could always find “Mr. Higgins” playing baseball, football, basketball, street hockey and kick the ball with his children and the neighborhood kids.
He most enjoyed having his whole family together for holidays with his favorite being family vacations to Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
Sonny was an avid reader. He loved to stay active in his younger adult years playing tennis, bowling, softball, and his favorite past-time golf where he went on to become a multiple time Club Champion at Billerica County Club.
Sonny will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
