Obituary of Richard F. Stewart
Richard “Dick” Filmore Stewart departed this life on December 5, 2023 , at age 95. Dick was born in Boston on January 10, 1928, to Frank and Nina (Campbell) Stewart of Malden, Massachusetts. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1946. He was married to Dorothy “Dot” MacKinnon of Melrose in 1949. Dick and Dot raised their family in Saugus, Massachusetts. They later resided in Melrose, Massachusetts.
Dick made his living working for the Boston Towboat Company in Boston Harbor, following in his father Frank’s career. He trained on the schooner Roseway in Boston Harbor. He worked his way up from deckhand to Captain to Docking Pilot. An extensive knowledge of seamanship, navigation boat handling, and local coastal geography and tides is required for this work.
He loved to waterski and enjoyed many summers with family at camp in Gray, Maine. He was a runner and member of the Malden YMCA for many years. He belonged to the Malden Elks club and Princeman chorus. He loved boating on Lake Winnipesaukee with his family. He enjoyed a fun and active retirement between Gilford, New Hampshire and winters in Naples, Florida.
Dick’s wife Dorothy Stewart predeceased him on October 15, 2023. Dick is survived by his four children; Frank of Hudson, New Hampshire; Richard with wife Kathy, of Wells, Maine; Cindy Barrett of Reno Nevada; and Doug with wife Sharon of Gilford, New Hampshire. He was blessed with 10 grandchildren, Heather, Ken, Elizabeth, Ricky, Dan, Jeremy, Katie, Jennifer, Amanda, Kim, and Meaghan as well as 17 great grandchildren.
Services will be held at Burns Funeral Home in Billerica, Massachusetts on Saturday December 9, 2023 at 10 am.
