I met Bill in 2001 through Wayne Wadhams. Bill had built a lot of furniture for Wayne, and we hired Bill to build us a suite of bedroom furniture. During the many months that he labored over our furniture, I got to know Bill and appreciate his fine sense of humor and his fierce perfectionism when it came to his woodworking. I called him a few times to make adjustments on the furniture, but over the years I lost contact. Recently, it appears Leslie and I may have to sell the bed he made for us, and I wanted to let him know how much joy the bed, bureaus, and incidental furniture he made had given us. Imagine my dismay to learn that he had passed almost two years ago. To Cyndi and his family, please accept my sincere condolences.

When I think of my interactions with Bill over the years they all bear a common thread; they make me smile when I think of his wonderful sense of humor. I loved his stories and his spirit of adventure. I remember the night we made a midnight raid on an old marble quarry in Vermont, which seemed like a great idea until we realized how heavy marble is to carry! A few weeks after that trip Bill returned to NH with one of those marble blocks carved into an image of a rock climber; a fitting gift for my brother. Bill was a true renaissance man, a lover of the arts and sciences with extraordinary talent. Were it not for those fond memories the world would be a little duller and sadder without his presence.

The five steps up to the porch of my new apartment, in 1986, were more than my aged dog Barnabas could manage. Bill loved Barnabas, so he built him a ramp of fine Douglas fir, tight-grained and straight as a pin. “Ramp” is an understatement. First he built a landing out over the steps. The ramp met it at a right angle and gently sloped down to the ground. It was an elegant design. Clean lines. You know it was solid. A tornado could take down the house before Bill’s work moved an inch. Okay, a micron. He was mad for precision, was our Bill.
For someone so particular and meticulous, so maddeningly committed to his routines and opinions, he sure could color outside the lines. He was funny beyond funny. Storytelling, lighting fast observations, impressions and transformations. I can’t begin to describe what he did with two zucchinis one summer evening.
There must be something that didn’t interest him. Nothing comes to mind, though. Nope, not a thing.
May his spirit be soaring among the constellations.
