Obituary of Carlos De Mendonca

Carlos De Mendonca passed away peacefully just after his 95th birthday at his home on January 11th, 2020 surrounded by his family. He was born to a family of eighteen siblings on December 26, 1924 in Santa Cruz, Graciosa, Azores. Carlos was predeceased by his beloved wife of 61 years Cidalia Mendonca, his son Luis Alves and his Son in Law, Aurelio Novo. He is survived by his three daughters Ana Maria Costa, her husband Manuel Costa, Cidalia Silva, her husband Renato Silva, Fatima Mendonca and her partner Christopher Barrett. He is also survived by his brother Serafim and his wife Irene; Sisters Lurdes Santos, Candida Leite and Ilda Santos. Carlos served four years with the military in the Portuguese colony of Angola, Africa and decided to stay. He later returned to the Azores, married the love of his life Cidalia, and brought her back to Angola to start and raise his family until emigrating to America in 1974. One of his greatest pleasures was spending time with his Grand and Great Grandchildren. Jorge Miguel Mendonca Novo and his husband Joe Manghisi; Aurelio Mendonca Novo and his wife Tina; Renato Mendonca Silva; Joia Cristina Mendonca Mercurio and her husband Daniel; Philip Mendonca Oliveira and his wife Christine; Ricardo Mendonca Costa and his partner Lola Corbelli; Ana Sofia Alves and her husband Rui Tavares; Luis Alves; Catarina Olivera Alves and her husband Nuno Januario. The next generation brought eight Great Grandchildren whom he adored: Marcus and Kyle Novo; Dario, Nico and Mariana Mercurio; Mason, Hayden and Paisely Oliveira; Amelia, Manel and Antonio. Carlos was the Patriarch of the family, a loving Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather who loved his family and country. He was a captivating storyteller and conversationalist and could always be found tinkering in his workshop making something out of nothing. A funeral will be held from the Burns Funeral Home, 354 Boston Rd., (Rt. 3A), Billerica, Tuesday, January 14, at 9:00 AM followed by a funeral mass in St. Theresa’s Church, Billerica at 10:00 AM.
