Obituary of Carl C Metzler

Carl Coleman Metzler, of Billerica MA passed away peacefully on Monday July 31, 2023 at age 93.

Carl was born on September 25, 1929 in Somerville, MA to Earl and Naomi (Coleman) Metzler. He was raised by his grandparents Stephen and Phoebe (Bennet) Metzler. After graduating from Middleboro Vocational High School in 1947 he enlisted in the US Navy. He served 3 years active duty aboard the USS Taconic and another 3 years in the reserves. Most of his working career was as a carpenter. Carl and his brother Earl, who was his idol, owned and operated C&E Contracting Co., building custom homes. He also worked for Parlee Farms and for a brief time taught carpentry at North Shore Vocational.

Carl was married to Mae Ellen Shedd (local owner of Mae Ellen Dance Studio in Billerica) from 1950 until she passed in 1970. He then married Marsha Aldrich of Medford, with whom he had his son Daniel, from 1972 until 1976. In 1980 he was married to Grace Sinclair of Waltham until her passing in 2002. His companion for the last 21 years was Vince-Ann Piasecki of Billerica.

Carl belonged to the Thomas Talbot Masonic Lodge since 1951,  the Scottish Rite of Boston,  and the Shriners Aleppo Temple of Wilmington. His passion was ballroom dancing. He and Grace would dance four or five nights a week and were members of the Society of Ballroom Dancers of Boston. The highlight of every year was dancing at the mansions in Newport, RI. He also enjoyed gardening. When his health began to decline his friend Tom Eicher would help him with the garden and things around the house.

Carl was preceded in death by his mother Naomi, his father Earl, his three brothers Earl, Hugh, and Warren and two sisters Ruby and Marie. He is survived by his companion Vince-Ann Piasecki of Billerica, his son Carl Daniel Metzler and his wife Molly of Los Angeles California and their children Max and Aurora. He also has many nieces and nephews in the area.
