Obituary of Dorothy M. Stewart

Dorothy “Dot” MacKinnon Stewart departed this life on October 15, 2023, at age of 97.   Dot was born in Sommerville, Massachusetts on June 11, 1926, to Minnie (Archibald) and Harry MacKinnon.  She was raised by Minnie and Harry until Minnie fell ill and passed away when Dot was 4 years old. Later she was raised by Margaret (Spaulding) and Harry MacKinnon.  She graduated from Melrose High School  and secretarial college in Boston, Massachusetts the year after. She was married to Richard “Dick” Stewart in 1949.  Dot and Dick raised their four children in Saugus, Massachusetts.  They later resided in Melrose, Massachusetts, Gilford, New Hampshire and Naples, Florida.  

After raising her children Dot worked at an insurance company, in Saugus, Massachusetts and later for ten years at Hood Milk Company, in Charlestown, Massachusetts. 

Dot loved baking, knitting, crocheting, reading, and wintering in Florida.  She loved her children and spoiling her grandchildren.  She was an active member of the Rebecca’s Lodge of Winthrop, Massachusetts including rising through the ranks of leadership to Noble Grand.  She enjoyed a fun and active retirement between Gilford, New Hampshire and winters in Naples, Florida.

 

Dorothy is survived by her husband of 74 years, Richard Stewart; her four children; Frank of Hudson, New Hampshire; Richard with wife Kathy, of Wells, Maine; Cindy Barrett of Reno Nevada; and Doug with wife Sharon of Gilford, New Hampshire.  She was blessed with 10 grandchildren, Heather, Ken, Elizabeth, Ricky, Dan, Jeremy, Katie, Jennifer, Amanda, Kim, and Meaghan as well as 17 great grandchildren. She is survived by her brother Allan MacKinnon from Palm Springs, California and brother Carle MacKinnon from Fort Mills, South Carolina.

 

Services will be held at Burns Funeral Home, 354 Boston Rd., (Rt. 3A), Billerica, Saturday, October 21, at 11:00 am, visiting hour prior to service from 10-11 AM. Relatives and friends invited. Interment, North Cemetery, Billerica.
