Obituary of Thin Ng

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Thin (Sunny) Ng on July 23, 2024 in Cambridge, MA. Sunny was born on January 28, 1936 in China and came to the United States when he was three-years old. He spent his childhood in Watertown, MA, where he was on the track team for Watertown High School, specializing in pole vaulting and high jumping.

Sunny continued his athletic activities at Tufts University where he earned a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering. Upon graduation he was commissioned into the US Navy as an ensign and served on the USS Forrestal and was later the pre-commissioning engineering officer for the USS Independence. He was proud to be a plank owner as part of the inaugural crew of the USS Independence. While in the Navy Reserve, Sunny continued his education, earning a master degree from Northeastern University and a PhD from Tufts University.

Following his discharge from the Navy, he enjoyed a career in the defense industry. The majority of his career was at GTE Government Systems from which he retired. He later interrupted his retirement with a short second career at Raytheon.

In his free time, Sunny enjoyed gardening and pencil sketching. He would say that he wanted to be an artist but made more money as an engineer.

Sunny was a devoted family man and is survived by his wife Charlotte, his sons Vincent and Steve (Stella), his granddaughters Natalie and Stephanie, and his sisters Betty (James) and Nella, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

A family visitation will be held at John C. Burns & Sons Funeral Home,305 Broadway, Cambridge, MA 02139 on August 5th, 6pm to 8pm. A private burial will be held the following day. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Sunny will be dearly missed by all who knew him, but his legacy will live on through his family and friends.
