Obituary of Marguerite J. Hier
Marguerite Josephine Hier nee Tomaszewski “Peggy” passed away on Friday, December 6th at the age of 83. Peggy was born on February 1, 1941, to Alice and Tony Tomaszewski in Standish, Michigan. Peggy is survived by her children Deborah Hier and Jodi (Patrick) Sampson, grandchildren Rex, Ivy, Kaylie, Alec, Jack, Willem, Maggy and Jessika, her sisters Marilyn (Felix) Meyette, Ann (late Gary) Schmidt and Barb (Jim) Dominowski, cousin Paul and other beloved family members, and her sweetheart Derek Mulligan. She was preceded in death by her parents Tony and Alice, son Tom and brother in law Gary.
Peggy was known for her sewing skills. Her quilted Christmas tree skirts and throws were highly coveted each year at St. Catherine’s church Christmas bazaar. Formally a resident of Baltimore where she raised her family, she was an avid football and baseball fan. She took her children to Colts training camp meet and greets, and many Orioles games during the Jim Palmer and Cal Ripkin, Jr. eras, for which her daughters are forever grateful. She loved to collect depression glass; her pattern was amber Patrician Spoke. In her later years, she was a teacher’s assistant through the Catholic Charities Foster Grandparent Program in Ms. Toppi’s St. Catherine’s School kindergarten class. She loved them all and was devoted to her work. Her vivacious, witty personality endeared her to all around her. Peggy’s heart rejected meanness, spitefulness, and hate, and leaves a legacy in her family, friends and all her former students from St. Catherine’s. Peggy will be missed dearly all who knew her.
A wake will take place at Burns Funeral Home in Cambridge on Saturday, December 14th at 9am. A funeral mass will follow at Sts. Louia & Zelie Martin Parish in Somerville at 10am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made In Peggy Hier’s honor to Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus School (formerly St. Catherine’s School), Ms. Toppi’s kindergarten class.
