Obituary of Evelyn M. Haines

Evelyn M. (McKenna) Haines, age 69, died Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at her home in Billerica. She was the beloved wife of the late William P. Haines. Born in Medford, December 15, 1943, she was the daughter of the late David and Dorothy (O’Connor) McKenna. Evelyn, who worked in public service for more than 40 years, began her career in Billerica as secretary for the Department of Public Works, a position she held for ten years. Mrs. Haines spent the next seven years in Chelmsford as executive secretary of the Chelmsford Board of Selectmen. Evelyn returned to Billerica where she remained and completed her career in the position of Assistant Town Manager, working with three former Town Managers, Paul Talbot, Robert Mercier, and Richard Montuori. She also held the position of interim Town Manager. Evelyn, a dedicated advocate and employee of the town of Billerica, retired in 2003. She was an original member of the Yankee Doodle Parade Steering Committee, which continues today. She spearheaded a one-acre land donation to the town to plant day lilies throughout Billerica. Also a Justice of the Peace, Evelyn was a member of many groups, clubs, and civic organizations, including the COA, Sunshine Gals, Town Meeting, Emblem, Lyons, Elks, Eagles in FL, Moose, Beautification Committee, Billerica Twinning Group, and numerous others. Evelyn loved Billerica and was devoted to it. She is survived by her three sons, William Haines and his wife Melinda of Lowell, Michael Haines and his fiancée Brenda Flynn of Billerica, and Kevin Haines, also of Billerica; her brothers, John McKenna and his wife Carole of Billerica, Paul McKenna and his wife Cynthia of Billerica, and David McKenna and his wife Karen of Chelmsford; her sisters, Dorothy Ann Morrill and her husband Edward of Sarasota, FL, Helen Sears and her husband Thomas also of Sarasota, FL, and Marybeth Casterlin and her husband Gary of Billerica. She also leaves her loving grandchildren, Kyle, Keenan, Alyssa, Michael, David, Jr., and Ashley, her two great grandchildren, Desirae and Justice, and her step- grandchildren, Jamie and Kayla Flynn. She is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law. She was the sister of the late Robert McKenna.
