Obituary of Lawrence Clifford

Lawrence Clifford "Duke" Dupont, age 84, of Billerica, a WWII Army Veteran, died Saturday evening, August 29, 2009 at Lahey Clinic from a heart attack. He was happily married to Maxiene (MacDonald) Dupont for 58 years. He was born in Berlin, New Hampshire, November 29, 1924, the son of Armand Aime Dupont and Elizabeth (Mooney) Dupont. Duke attended Marsten Elementary School and Berlin High School. He was a member of his High School Ski Team which won four New England championships. Duke was also a right-fielder for the High School baseball team. Duke served as a medic and a rifleman in the 29th Infantry Division during WWII. He was in the second wave of troops that stormed Omaha Beach. He also served in Northern France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. Duke met his wife, Maxiene, in North Conway. They were married on May 4, 1951. Duke worked for 35 years as a welder and foreman for the McGarrahan Bridge and Iron Company. Duke coached hockey and Little League teams. He was an avid golfer and vacationed for many years with his family at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport, Maine. His warm, outgoing personality and sense of humor endeared him to all who came in contact with him. He was genuine and without guile. He always said what he meant and was quick to forgive and forget. He always had a twinkle in his eye and a winning smile. If there were a movie about Duke, he would be played by Jack Lemmon or Jack Nicholson. Besides his loving wife, Maxiene, Duke is survived by two daughters, Candace "Candy" A. Brassard of Annandale, VA, and Jayne Lee Richard, of Gorham, NH; one son, Lawrence "Larry" C. Dupont, Jr. of Billerica, MA; two sons-in-law, David W. Brassard of Annandale, VA and Paul Richard of Gorham, NH; one granddaughter, April E. Brassard; and by one step-granddaughter, Leslie Richard.
