Obituary of Robert A. Marshall

Marshall, Robert Anthony “Bob”, 74, of Cambridge, MA on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Cambridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Cambridge, MA, after a brave and valiant battle against Stage 4 Lymphoma and various other health issues, surrounded by loving friends he considered his family. Bob was born on June 12, 1942 at the Boston Floating Hospital to the late Maurice “Teddy” and Maria Josephine (Gulla) Marshall. Bob was the stepson of the late Evelyn (Dixon) Marshall, brother of the late Cheryl (Marshall), and “stepfather” of the late Jennifer (Delaney) Carceo. Bob had owned and operated Harvard Book & Binding in Harvard Square for 40 years, from 1971 to 2011, specializing in books from the 1400’s to the late 1700’s. Bob was active in the Harvard Square Business Association and local community for 47 years. Bob also worked for the City of Cambridge intermittently in various roles, from 1970 until illness forced him to retire in February of this year. Bob was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Bob grew up in Lynn, MA, having graduated from High School in 1960. He always loved to talk about how he knew late Red Sox Legend Tony Conigliaro from school. Bob’s favorite restaurant in Harvard Square was the Hong Kong, and had dined there many times over the years. Bob will be forever known for that and his generosity with and for the homeless community of Harvard Square. Bob leaves behind his many girlfriends, “son in law” Steven Carceo, his “assistant” Kelly Dugas Coveney and her husband Dennis Coveney, Cambridge Vice Mayor Marc Mc Govern, John Beath, Billy Dodge, Jeff Tettlebaum, Ruth Blair, to name several of the many of Bob’s friends in Harvard Square and everywhere else. The friends of Bob Marshall would like to thank the Doctors, Nurses, Palliative Care Team and Staff at Mass General Hospital and Cambridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their compassionate care of Bob the past several months, as well as the City of Cambridge and Cambridge Mayor’s Office for their assistance. There will be a memorial service held for Bob on April 20, 2017 at 4 PM at Christ Church, 0 Garden Street, Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA, and another at a date and time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Harvard Square Churches Meals Program, 0 Garden Street, Christ Church, Cambridge, MA 02138 or National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Office of Development, 1776 D Street NW, Washington, DC, 20006-5303.
