Obituary of William J. McCarty

William J. McCarty, Jr., age 72, died Sunday, June 11, 2017, at his home with his loving family. He was the beloved husband of M. Carolyn (Wright) McCarty, to whom he was married for 42 years. He was born in Cambridge, May 1, 1945, son of the late William J. and Dorothy (Shea) McCarty. He grew up in Woburn, MA, with his sister, Barbara. His love of music was shared with his bandmates in The Caravans, where he played lead guitar and shared vocals. He worked as food broker in the New England area for many years. His family was very important to him, spending time with his daughters and especially his grandchildren. Raising his girls in Billerica, he became the team “Dad”. He could be found with his daughters cheering them on from the stands at ice rinks, volleyball and basketball courts or tracks throughout Massachusetts. He was the quintessential fan and their greatest supporter. He enjoyed telling stories, playing with his grandchildren and watching them grow. Fishing was his favorite pastime. Many nights he could be found sitting along the Cape Cod Canal listening to oldies songs on the radio and casting a line. His home away from home was in Hyannis and he adored bringing his family there to create memories. Besides his wife, he is survived by his 3 daughters and sons–in--law, Erin Wessling and her husband, Michael, of Londonderry, NH, Jennifer McCarty of Billerica and Meghan Harkins and her husband, Brad, of Billerica. His sister, Barbara Walton and her husband, Karl, of Somers, CT, . and his five loving grandchildren, Taylor, Garrett , Aiden and Maeve Wessling and Kiernan Harkins. He was a loving uncle and friend to many.
