Obituary of Margaret Isabelle Young
Young of Billerica, January 23, 2018, Margaret Isabelle (Lacey) Young, age 83. Beloved wife of the late Richard Henry Young. Margaret Lacey was born March 5, 1934 at a relative's home in Tewksbury, MA. She grew up in Billerica at 212 Andover Road with her mother and father, Willette and Patrick Lacey, and her two sisters, Patricia and Dorothy.
Margaret, or Mitzi as most knew her, graduated from Billerica High School with the Class of 1951, and later from nursing school at Lowell General with the Class of 1954. In 1955, she married Richard Henry Young. Dick and Mitzi would go on to have five children: Richard II, Steven, Lynda, William, and Deborah, and one foster son, Kenneth.
Mitzi was, first and foremost, a mother. In addition to raising her own five children, she and Dick opened their home to many foster children over the years, and the neighborhood teenagers always knew that there would be a couch for them to sleep on at their house. On Wednesday nights, all the children in the neighborhood were welcome to come over to the house where Mitzi would cook them dinner on her night off from work. There was always room for one more.
Mitzi would continue to grow in her career, earning her BS in Nursing from New England College in 1983. She worked for many years as a private duty nurse for the Nesmith family in Lowell, as well as a night supervisor for several nursing homes. In her retirement years she worked at the Falkner Kindergarten from 2001 to 2017, where many of the children referred to her as “Nana”.
“Nana” is also the name that her eight grandchildren knew her by. A trip to Nana's house was always accompanied by old family stories, chocolate fudgsicles, and eventually an accounting of the family tree, which she had worked painstakingly to trace back to historical figures such as Johnny “Appleseed” Chapman and the original pilgrims of the Mayflower. Family was one of the most important things to Mitzi, and she insisted on making a personalized quilt for every wedding and birth for her children and grandchildren.
Other interests that Mitzi had were vacationing with her family on Cape Cod and becoming involved in both the First Congregational Church in Billerica and the Girls Scouts. As a Girl Scout Leader, she served as a delegate at several National Conventions, as well as the Neighborhood Chairperson for the Town of Billerica for 15 years. Mitzi was recognized for her volunteer work and received the Thanks Badge, which is the highest award given to Girl Scout volunteers. She passed on her love of scouting to her children and grandchildren.
In recent years, Mitzi became a proud great grandmother to four great grandchildren. She was able to spend her last days at home on the land she grew up on, surrounded by four generations of her family and friends. She passed peacefully in her bed on the afternoon of Tuesday, January 23, 2018. She is survived by her children; Richard Young and his wife, Robin, Steven Young and his wife, Donna, William Young and his wife, Cheryl, and Deborah MacEachern and her, husband, David, all of Billerica, and her foster son, Ken Lessard of VT; her sisters, Patricia Hefler of Billerica and Dorothy Risher of Tewksbury. She also leaves her grandchildren, Christine Topcubasi and her husband, Celil, of Tewksbury, Meghan Tuck and her husband, Richard, of Falmouth, Jeffrey Young and his wife, Amanda, Richard Young, and David MacEachern, all of Billerica, Deborah LaPan and her husband, Matthew, of Littleton, Danielle MacEachern of Goffstown, NH, and Lacey Lumaya of North Hills, CA, and her great grandchildren, Parker LaPan, Elliot Young, Trevor Topcuubasil and Kayden Tuck, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was also the mother -in-law of Joseph Lumaya of Northwood, CA and mother of the late Lynda Lumaya.
