To the Ryan Family-
I am sorry to hear of Dave's passing...he was one of the most caring and compassionate members of our track officiating fraternity...he always took the time to help a new member of the MTFOA, and was always supportive to a competitor, regardless of their ability or skill level...his sense of humor and governance of the finish line area will be missed by official and coach alike...I will always remember him returning from the medical tent with a cup of ice for his mid-meet soda...my thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Ryan Clan...

Dave was always one of the important figures at my track meets - as important as his professionalism and expertise were, his sense of purpose, his undisguised joy for the success of young athletes, and his irrepressible humor were hallmarks to his participation and all went beyond his official duties. It was a requirement at every meet to spend a few minutes talking with him - to hear his stories and to be reminded of what was important. Just the best - thank you.

Dave will be missed by us all. Few had his passion for the sport of Track, as he would enjoy a JV 600 if the kids were close and competed hard. The reward for the effort may be a piece of licorice, or the result times from the race off his printerwatch. He would recognize and enjoy the effort. You were going to enjoy the meet if you were working the finish line with Dave. He was a gentleman, a comedian, and a wonderful man. Dave will truly be missed.

Helen, you need to know, if you do not already, how lovely a man you spent the majority of your life with. Once we took a drive in New Hampshire down the Kangamangus, past the Mt. Washington hotel, through gorgeous mountains and stunning scenery and all Dave could say was that his blessing in life came from you and his family. He was not taken by the mountains or the midday sun. He was not paused by the beauty around him. He was simply in awe of what he already had - you, Tracey, Sandra and Steven. A simple life with the wealth of love. There are no riches more important than what you all gave him in return and while his body may have not supported his pride, his heart and mind always did. There is a poem by Henry Van Dyke that tells us that while we sit on this shore and wave farewell, there are other on the opposite horizon shouting “Here he comes!” - how blessed are they who will receive the soul of a man who loved his family and his wife like David Ryan did and does. His spirit lives on in each of you. Allow his persistence to stay in your heart and know that with each simple breeze, each sullen evening, each unmarked turn of a season...he has smiled on you all. I am so very sorry for all you have lost. Peace soon. - Tom.

Dear Tracey and Family,
I have to say I didn't realize your Dad was a track super star in his youth that led to his lifelong passion for the sport. I really admire that. I loved reading the other tributes that have been posted and it is amazing to see how many people he has touched throughout his life. I always remember him as an adoring father and grandfather, at Clark Ave in a moments notice whenever he was needed. I'll be thinking of him every time I go to the Reggie to watch Laine race. May his spirit continue to live on; I know how much he will be missed by you and your family.
Love,
Lois, Laine and Nate

Ryan Family,
I worked track meets with Dave for over thirty years. Besides being a great timer, Dave was the funniest and most enjoyable guy to work with. I'll miss him and think of him whenever we start doing meets again.
My condolences Bob Welch

Coach (Cohen) that was beautiful. I remember Dave at all our track meets from 1964-1968. He was always kind and funny. I continued to see him at track meets from 1969 to the present day as I competed as a masters sprinter over the past 37 years.
He always had a smile and a kind word...about me being too old to still compete. Will miss him at competitions ( when we finally resume track meets)
Thanks for your lovely words about one of our most dedicated NU Huskies.
Track men. RIP Dave

We lost a loyal and dedicated track alumnus last week and I lost a dear friend, Dave Ryan. My thoughts below are inadequate but heart felt. Rest in peace my dear friend.
How do you say good bye to the skinny Stoneham high school two miler who was the scourge of the Middlesex League who earned a scholarship to Northeastern University; an outstanding student who continued his winning ways from high school and finished his tenure at Huskyville by serving as an assistant coach who started Don MacAulay on his heralded career?
How do you say good bye to the outstanding official who served as the chief timer of the Boston marathon for decades, the chief timer at the high school state meets as well as almost all of the collegiate meets in the area; the gold standard against which all aspiring officials were measured? F A T notwithstanding
How do you say good bye to the person who makes a track meet seem like attending a comedy club; who offers scholarships to the Dave Ryan School of timing and proffers succinct comments like,” you have the minutes right, now work on the seconds”?
How do you say good bye to a life-long friend who shared the elation of your victories and suffered the pain of your defeats; who promoted your programs and defended against your naysayers?
The fact is, you can’t unless you mitigate your feeling of distress with the admiration of a person who brought light, comfort and everlasting friendship to a relationship.
Good bye, old friend; to be loved is to live forever.

Here's one of my favorite poems by AE Housman, that reminds me of my dad. Our hearts ache without him.
The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.
To-day, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.
Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.
Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears:
Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.
So set, before its echoes fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.
And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl's.
