What an absolute honor and privilege it was to get to know and care for Gibby over the past few months. I will miss his contagious laugh and positive outlook. He was able to put life into perspective for me in ways many other could not. We are all better people for knowing him and I can confidently say, he was laughing until the very end… he will be so missed by all of us at the Bedford VA. May he rest in eternal peace.

Linda and Glenn,
My deepest condolences on the loss of your true, life hero. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet your Dad on occasion, and it was immediately apparent what a wonderful person he was. His friendly demeanor and sense of humor was always present and his empathy and kindness for others also shown through brightly.
I am often told stories from Steve about his lush gardens, healthy approach to eating and his willingness to teach others to acheive "green thumbs".
Linda, what a gift you received in a father like Gayle! Glenn, how lucky were you to have found Linda AND her Dad who treated you as his own. David's opportunity to learn from Gibby for so many years will resonate with you both as he reflects Gibby's influence back in all his does each day to contribute to the lives of Gabriella and Amelia.
Find comfort in his life well-served and well-lived. Bask in the light of his buoyant nature and closeness to the Earth, knowing his stewardship of both created a bounty of love for more than just his family, but for all whose lives were touched by him.
With deepest sympathy and condolences,
Stephen and Treena Wicks

To My Dear Dad - The world has many heroes who have won a world of fame. Heroes who have given their all to win in life's great game. But all the famous heroes that our changing world has had. There's not a one I look up to more than my Dad. To me, my Dad's a hero, though he'd turn away from praise. He's heroic in his quiet strength and gentle, giving ways. He may not make the headlines. You won't see him on TV. But I think my Dad is everything a hero ought to be. He always keeps his promises, on that I can depend. He's loyal to me, no matter what, and will always be my friend. So when I think of heroes and the great things that they've done, I feel the way that I've always felt- MY DAD IS THE GREATEST ONE. I can't imagine my life without you Dad! Thank you for holding my hand since the day I was born! I will hold you in my heart until we meet again! Your Loving Daughter Linda

Glenn and Linda...
Getting to meet and sit and talk with Gayle was one of the most memorable times of my life. This was at the 2015 USS Helena Organization reunion in Quincy. One fine man and he will be missed.
The attached photo of Gayle with Harold and me reminds me of that evening. For clarification, Harold and me are legacy members of the Organization.
Gayle was one of the last of the USS Helena CL-50 veterans.
Never to be forgotten.

We fondly called you "Gibby". You were loved by everyone both the staff and veterans. We will greatly miss your jokes, your stories about the war, and especially the ship you were on. Some of us got well acquainted with war stories that became part of our shift and evening routine. Age is just a number! Even though you were 101, you still did your best to help us out so that we do not hurt ourselves. You were always so thoughtful and kind to everyone. We will miss you dearly. Rest well Mr. Gilbert.
Patience
