Obituary of Richard C. Batten

BATTEN, Richard C. Sr. 69, of Billerica, Mass. passed away peacefully on April 1st, 2016 at Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts. Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, he was the husband of Maureen Batten of 43 years and the son of the late Jack and Alice Batten. He was raised and educated in Needham, MA and after graduating from Needham High School he attended the University of Indiana where he studied Sociology. He spent most of his career in the banking business with various positions from 1970-2005. A longtime resident of Billerica, he enjoyed cycling and would often plan his routes according Dunkin Donuts coffee stops. He had a passion for music, especially jazz and for many years he played trumpet in the Concord Band and the Suburbanaires Big Band. He had a curiosity for exploring new roads and a knack for directions, a skill that came in handy as he was most recently employed as a driver for The Ride. He served as a Eucharistic minister at St. Mary’s Church in Billerica and he was an active and enthusiastic participant in a weekly bible study there. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He died surrounded by his family. He will be deeply missed. In addition to his wife he is survived by his son, Richard C. Batten, Jr. and his wife Patricia of Newburyport, MA, and their three children, Jack, Sam and Timothy; his daughter, Laurie Burns and her husband Matthew of Leominster, MA, and their two children, Luke and Cassidy. A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s church in Billerica on Monday April 4th at 10:30 AM. Calling hours are Sunday, April 3rd, from 4-7 at Burns Funeral Home in Billerica.
